I Can Do it On Two Feet.
Today, I stood in my living room, and hugged my wife close to me while standing for the first time since March. And if you don’t know what that feels like, let me tell you, it’s something else.
Because I got my foot today.
Don’t believe me? Well, I have receipts. Here’s a pic.
And it’s purple. Just as promised.
And, so, a whole new adventure begins. Within the next couple of days, I should have a schedule for outpatient rehab for gait training, which is to make me look like I’m not limping with every step I take, which should be valuable, because, right now, I look like I’m limping with every step I take.
Then, we’re out and off. The world is my very deliberate and kind of slow oyster.
Mostly, it’s the little things I’m looking forward to. Those hugs, my goodness. There are so many people I want to bear hug. So many that have been waiting and asking and hoping that I get to this day, and I am so grateful for all of those check ins, and questions, and encouragement. It’s really fantastic.
I’m looking forward to being able to navigate my kitchen again. Standing to chop and stir and being able to handle multiple functions at once, without having to wheel to the location in which it is happening will be amazing
I will be able to walk into my son’s bedroom and sit on the edge of his bed when he goes to sleep again. That will be wonderful, even if debating with him about actually going to sleep will be a pain.
I’ll be able to enter the house through the garage, especially when it’s raining, because I’ll be able to use the little 3” step that lives there. It’s amazing what small things can keep you from doing.
I will be able to go out to my back porch and grill and use the Blackstone, which I also haven’t been able to do in months.
And, looking forward, there’s so many other things I want to do. Things I’ll be able to do, once I put in the rehab work and get down to it.
It is, to be sure, a really big day.
There are lots of things about the new foot that are interesting, and I’m planning on doing a separate post about them soon, complete with resources on things to do, buy, get, and use, but, for today, I just want to celebrate my new foot.
And look forward anxiously to when I can finally once again pee standing up.

As always, if you have it in you, please give a thought to donating time or money to Hospice Austin. They do amazing work for people who are going through the hardest thing a person can face.
