Adding Color to Your Life

My favorite color is purple, in case you were wondering.

Before the amputation, purple was my favorite color, as well, but if you didn’t ask, you wouldn’t know it.

I have decided that, in my bonus life, I’m going to add as much color as possible. Why not? There’s no shame in color, is there? But, in the before time, I thought having too much color would call too much attention to myself.

Well, guess what? I now feature something that calls even more attention to myself than ever before, and I’m choosing not to be embarrassed by that, so, voila, let there be color!

I came to this decision while in the hospital, and while browsing for my custom wheelchair.

When you’re in the hospital, the chair you have is a loaner, and that comes with you when you go home, until your custom is ready. What is custom about it, you ask? Well, aside from being able to pick the color of the chassis, they measure you to determine your width, and the style of chair you get, so it fits you and is as lightweight as possible.

Anyway, I saw that there was an option for a purple chair, and I leapt at it

Three weeks after getting home, I got my chair, and I love it. But, there were hard armrests that needed padding, so I got big purple fuzzy pads to go with it.

I’ve had nothing but compliments.

My rig. There are many like her, but this one is mine.

Since then, I’ve bought purple shorts, a purple floral shirt, a purple pill case, a purple mouse, and even the MacBook Neo I’m currently writing this post on is purple.

Did I mention that purple was my favorite color?

Here’s the thing.

If you’re going to have all of this new gear and equipment and such, and you have the chance to customize things, you might as well make it aesthetically pleasing for yourself. That way, you get a little boost of joy when you look at these things, instead of the dread you might have by reminding yourself that they’re tools to naviate your disability.

I hear that there’s a chance that I might be able to customize my prosthesis when the time comes.

Guess what color I’m going to make it?

Green. With a Philadelphia Eagles wrap, of course.

I was an Eagles fan before I knew what purple was.

As always, if you have it in you, please give a thought to donating time or money to Hospice Austin. They do amazing work for people who are going through the hardest thing a person can face.
